ACTIVITY PROMPT

In this two-part exercise, you will spend some time exploring the different parts of your campus/school to investigate different sounds.

Then, you will compile a playlist of up to 3 different "listening spots" recordings to share with the whole class. The final goal is to be able to recreate these recordings with materials you find in your classroom.

1st

Students find 3 “listening spots” in their immediate environment. Use your phone or laptop to record the sounds. You are the composer of these recordings!

1. Find at least 3 different sounds that CONTRAST each other
2. Get creative, get CLOSE to things, use your ears and your intuition.
3. Record the same thing from different angles.
4. Write about your findings for the recording of each "listening spot" Use your phone or laptop to record the sounds. You are the composer of these recordings!
5. You could sketch a map to pinpoint the locations of each sound

2nd

؜Now, it is your turn to recreate the sound walk you just created! However, you must design the recreation of the sounds only using materials around you. Test out different materials, different ways of making sound (maybe you are hitting, rubbing, scratching, ect), and even different volumes. Anything is fair game in terms of props, so you're free to be as imaginative as possible...see how close you can get to perfectly mimicking the sound.

1. Prototype one way for each sound recording that mimics what you recorded outdoors.

؜Once you're done, For each sound, ask:

1. What emotions, colors, textures, and movements does this sound evoke?
2. Is it soft or harsh? Rhythmic or random? Calm or energetic?
3. How might it feel if you could touch it?

3rd

4th

1. Submit the outdoor "listening spot" recordings
2. Videos of you making the sounds for each of the recreated recordings
3. Descriptions of each of the recordings
