WHAT WE ARE DOING
WHY WE ARE DOING IT
Writing down, sketching, and sharing as many drawing machine ideas as possible inspired by your precedent research
To select the drawing machine concept that your group will develop through prototyping
1 - ENCOURAGE WILD IDEAS
2 - SUSPEND JUDGMENT
4 - BUILD ON IDEAS
5 - BE VISUAL
3 - GO FOR QUANTITY
Wild ideas can often give rise to creative leaps.
Don’t shoot down someone else’s idea.
Aim for as many ideas as possible.
Build and expand on the ideas of others.
Sketch your ideas.
ACTIVITY MATERIALS
ACTIVITY PROMPT
As a class, you will look at the lists on the following slide. There are 2 categories: Motion & Medium.
To generate ideas, you'll combine an item from List 1 (motion) with an item from List 2 (medium) and brainstorm how that might become drawing machine!

Group idea jam pinup
As a class, write down as many possible ideas as you can for the 2 lists. Try to think expansively!
As a group choose one item from each list, and try to envision the possible resulting drawing machine(s). Be sure to sketch your ideas, and write down which words you chose. Repeat at least three times.
Share your ideas with the group. Which of the ideas generated seems the most interesting, innovative, playful, outlandish? The teacher will gather brainstormed concepts on the whiteboard.
nb: This session can be done individually, and groups can be formed later based on students’ selected ideas.

Discuss your ideas with the group and share your concept with the teacher
Prompt
In this brainstorming activity, we will generate the ideas that will define the concepts of our group projects. We will start by generating idea lists individually, then as a group share all ideas on a pin-up brainstorming board with writing, drawing, post-it notes, and a lot of discussion.
Deliverables
At the end of this activity, the group will have created a collective pin-up brainstorming board. With this resource, the studio facilitator should take time to partner project pairs and create project folders before the next studio session. The next studio session will begin with the sharing of project concepts and project partnerships.
